NCRS FOUNDERS Award®

This award was created by the National Corvette Restorers Society in 1995, in honor of the seven founding fathers of NCRS. The Founders Award encourages and recognizes the value and enjoyment of member participation in NCRS activities and demonstrates the NCRS commitment to equally recognize the significance of the "Driven Corvette" among our membership, regardless of Flight status achieved and applies to 1953 - 1989 Corvettes. To achieve this coveted award, an owner must first be a member of any NCRS Chapter. Achieve any NCRS Flight award at a Chapter judging event, driven both ways. Achieve a 96% score on an operations check at a regional driven both ways. Achieve a level 1 or higher rating in the NCRS Judging or Tabulation recognition program. Submit an article for the "Corvette Restorer" magazine. Participate in the NCRS National Road Tour, a minimum of 500 miles. Display the car and recheck the operations at the National Convention scoring at least 96%. It must all be accomplished within a three year period. As of end of the 2001 season, out of 14,500 members across the country, only 135 individuals have received the Founders award. One member has done it two years in a row. Those founding fathers present at our National Convention personally present the special plaque.

Jim & Carolyn's NCRS Top Flight Award®

The National at Park City, Utah FOUNDERS Award

"1969 Team Leader, Chuck Berger  with junior judges used the 1st time this year to generate Corvette interest with the next generation. The girls assisted Chuck and were as  difficult to satisfy."

"A portion of the judging field taken from our hotel room.  Our car is behind the NCRS trailer, upper right corner.  It was not possible to get all 133 cars into one photo."

A Special Message from Jim & Carolyn on winning the Founders Award

"We worked on this for the better part of 1 year.  In addition to my meeting requirements by participating in NCRS functions, the car had to be driven to and from three NCRS shows and receive scores above NCRS standards.

The first was chapter flight judging in St Louis in April.  We received our second Top Flight award with a score of 97.7 out of 100.  With driving points, the score was 100.2.

Next, in May, was a regional judging in Bowling Green which included an unwelcome hail storm.  This was an operations check, by the ’69 team leader, of the mechanical/electrical functions.  We received a score of 750 out of 750.

Next, in July, we were required to drive in the road tour to the National Convention in Park City, UT, followed by a repeat of the operations check.  The road tour to Park City was lead by Dana Forrester and covered 1600 miles.  Again, we scored a perfect 750 out of 750.

In all, we drove about 4400 miles in a non air conditioned car, and the car performed without a hitch.

Just thought you might like to know some of the details of our road to the award."

On the Road to achieving the Duntov Mark of Excellent Award

NCRS DUNTOV Mark of Excellence Award®

This award was created by the National Corvette Restorers Society in 1985, in honor of Mr. Zora Arkus-Duntov, long-time Chief Engineer for the Chevrolet Corvette, who retired from General Motors in 1975. The Duntov Award recognizes individuals for the restoration and preservation of 1953 -1974 Corvettes. To achieve this coveted award, an owner must first attain a judging score of at least 97% out of 100 % based on an original "as manufactured" standard at a National or Regional NCRS event; as well as present the car for a rigorous performance test of all vehicle mechanical components and functions, all of which must operate as those of a new car, without a single failure. Finally, the car must again score at least 97%, at a National NCRS Convention, to receive the Duntov Award. The process of achieving the Duntov Award requires attendance at a minimum of three events, and must be completed within a three year period. As of the end of the 2001 season, out of 14,500 NCRS members across the country, only 581 Corvettes have achieved the Duntov Mark of Excellence.

Jim's E-mail to the Club Members about the first step of the Duntov Award

"Our trip in October to Waco, Texas was for an NCRS Regional meet.  We had the '69 there for the Performance Verification (PV).  The PV is the toughest judging that NCRS does.  This is the first real test for a Duntov, and we passed!

The test involves the team leader checking all of the mechanical, electrical, and vacuum functions of the car.  It is required that each of the functions perform as the car left the factory.  The way my car is configured, there were 127 line items checked.  Some of the line items have more than one item to check, for example, courtesy lights would be one line item but three lights are checked.  Any item that does not work properly results in a "fail".  The first "fail" opens a fifteen minute window for the owner to make a repair.  The second "fail" ends the judging for that meet.

The judging begins with a check of paperwork and verification that there are no leaks. The first car function checked is verification that the hood release lever will return from spring pressure and not need to be pushed forward. (thanks Jim C.).  I mention this item to show how detailed this test is.  After demonstrating that the many functions, including fast and slow idle, windshield wipers, windshield and headlight washers, locks, windows, heater, convertible top, gauges, and fiber optic light monitor function, it is time for a 10 to 15 mile road test with the team leader as the passenger.  During this test, it is required to accelerate to 90% of the tachometer red line.  This is done in second gear and demonstrates that performance is smooth and the carburetor performs as it should.  It is required to decelerate in each of the gears to assure the transmission will not jump out of gear and to turn tight figure eights to verify the suspension.  During this test, the team leader is listening for excessive and persistent rattles, whistles and unacceptable mechanical sounds. He also checks for unwarranted drafts.  When the road test is completed, the team leader makes a final check for leaks.  One spot of any fluid results in a "fail".

It is a relief to have this behind us.  Next is preparation for the first of two Flight Judging's in which we must score at least 97%.
