After watching the weather forecast all week, I met up with nine other Vettes Saturday morning to start out on our first "Mystery Cruise".
The weather was perfect as we headed south on Hwy 65, then south on Scenic 7 at Harrison, Arkansas. Next, south onto Russellville, we turned left and headed for Petit Jean Mountain for a nice lunch at the Mather Lodge built in the 30's by the CCC. We were very lucky as we just beat about 50 bikers into the restaurant and were seated immediately. After lunch we drove to the Winthrop Rockefeller Institute for a tour. Then we visited the Museum of Automobiles.
Next, we were off for our final destination. Traveling west on Hwy 10 we turned north at Havana onto Hwy 309 and drove up to the lodge located atop 2,753-foot Mount Magazine, the state's highest mountain.
We pulled into the Mt. Magazine Lodge just as some Ferrari owners pulled in. They were from the Kansas City area.
After getting checked in, we were able to relax and look out over the countryside and just enjoy the breathtaking view. We met up at seven for dinner in the Lodge's restaurant and had a terrific time based on all the laughter. We were seated next to the Ferrari group and some good natured ribbing went on between our two groups. The Ferrari bunch treated us to dessert. Thanks to the Ferrari bunch. A little after 2 AM, we had quite a light show as a thunderstorm moved through. Sunday morning, everyone ate breakfast on their own schedule and we packed up for a 10 AM departure. The Ferrari bunch left with us and we drove to a scenic overview and took some group photos of our cars( Corvettes and Ferraris). We took Hwy 23 north and drove the "Pig Tail". It was a beautiful drive but would have been nicer if it had not started to rain on our parade. We stopped off at Sparky's in Eureka Springs for a late lunch and then home.
I don't believe anyone had a clue where we were going to end up and most didn't have a clue where we were when we got there. I had a great time planning the Mystery Cruise, and I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. Joe P.
Thumbs-up to Joe for all his hard work getting this wonderful Mystery Weekend organized for everyone to enjoy!!! We wish to thank Debbie G, Cindy H, Dean K, and Joe P for the wonderful photos |
