Parking at the Coleman Theatre

We visited the historic Coleman Theatre.  Originally a vaudeville theatre and movie palace, the "Coleman Theatre Beautiful" opened to a full house of 1,600, at $1.00 a seat, on April 18, 1929.  The Coleman Theatre was built by a mining magnate and the theatre hosted many famous actors, singers and vaudeville acts in the early days.  Over time, the building fell into serious disrepair.   After the building was donated to the city of Miami in 1989, a long period of restoration was begun.  Now, much of its early opulence has been restored.

After the tour of the Coleman, the group drove to Baxter Springs, KS for lunch at the Café on the Route, which was featured on the Food Network’s, Diners, Drive-ins and Dives.  Many of us topped off our lunch with their signature dessert, the Brunella, a cheesecake stuffed flour tortilla, deep-fried and served with toppings – yum!

Cafe on the Route is located in the old Crowell Bank built in 1870.  This historic landmark was robbed in 1876 by Jesse James and Cole Younger.  The Mother Road, Route 55, passes by the cafe's front door.  Many guests from around the world have enjoyed the unique dining experience Cafe on the Route offers.
